Overview of the Computer Science Summer Institute

Google’s Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI) is for high school seniors with a passion for technology especially students from historically groups in the field.

The CSSI program will be a three-week introduction to computer science for graduating students to learn more in computer science.

As CSSI students, you will learn programming fundamentals directly from Google engineers, this gives you a core view of things.

An inside look at some of Google’s most exciting, emerging technologies, and even design and develop your own application with fellow participants.

Attend the program at one of Google office locations in Mountain View, Calif., Boston, or Seattle/Kirkland, and experience firsthand Google’s unique and innovative office culture.

Attendees will enjoy a unique residential experience in dorm-style housing at local universities. CSSI is an all-expenses-paid program. Google will provide housing, meals and transportation for invited students.

Who can attend the program (Google Computer Science Summer)

Any high school senior who plans to attend a four year institution in the US or Canada, has a passion for technology, and intends to enroll in a computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or related fields is free to attend.

Google is committed to increasing the enrollment and retention of students in the field of computer science. CSSI is not your average summer camp. It’s an intensive, interactive, hands-on, and fun program that seeks to inspire the tech leaders and innovators of tomorrow by supporting the study of computer science, software engineering etc.

How can I apply for the Program

This is easy, You’ll need to complete a general application, which includes a transcript and two essay questions. Also, candidate will be asked to complete an online challenge at the beginning of March. Visit the Google CSSI page for more information. Then follow up with instructions on how to apply.

Program goals (Google Computer Science Summer)

  • To help participants begin building important personal networks and friendships with a diverse group of students who share their passion for technology and computer science.
  • To give students an inside look at Google’s unique environment, community, and culture.
  • Provide students with an interest in computer science an opportunity to learn what their future career might hold, and inspire them to complete their work towards a technical degree.
  • To help students develop their technical skills, build confidence in their abilities, and better prepare them to study computer science or closely-related fields.
  • Expose or provide exposure and insight into Google’s internship program and technical career opportunities.

Computer Science with CSSI: Online

Google’s Computer Science Summer Institute Online is a 4-week introduction to computer science for rising students with a passion for technology.

Online is not your average virtual summer camp. It’s an intensive, interactive, and fun program that seeks to inspire the tech leaders.

Also, to help innovators of tomorrow by supporting the study of computer science, software engineering, and other closely-related subjects.

All Eligible Students should be

  • A current high school senior or new transfer student who has been admitted to Northeastern for the upcoming fall semester and intends to enroll as a full-time student for the fall semester
  • Interested in computer science, software engineering, business and/or another closely-related subject
  • Must be able to participate in all of the online activities and technical workshops.

Contents of the CSSI program includes: (Google Computer Science Summer)

  • A specially designed project-based curriculum that includes HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Python and Google App Engine to help prepare students for their first year of college Computer Science.
  • Daily developmental sessions to help students prepare for Computer Science studies and future job opportunities.
  • Opportunities to interact directly with Google engineers.
  • Hands-on support form NEIU faculty, staff and peer leaders.
  • Exposure and insight into Google’s internship programs and technical career opportunities.

There is no cost to participate in this program and all materials will be provided. Students who successfully complete the CSSI: Extension program will be granted a three-credit-hour tuition scholarship for the upcoming fall semester at Northeastern.

CSSI-Extension Includes

  • A training week (“train-the-trainer”) at Google’s headquarters for the lead faculty member teaching CSSI curriculum at their institution.
  • Access to the CSSI curriculum.
  • A toolkit explaining how to implement the program.
  • Consultation with Googlers on executing the program.
  • An invitation to shadow one day of a Google-run CSSI program.
