Wesleyan Freeman Scholarships Description

The Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program provides expenses for a four-year course of study toward a bachelor’s degree for up to eleven exceptionally able Asian students annually from selected Asian countries and regions.

The first Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholars enrolled at Wesleyan in September of 1995. The Freeman Foundation, creator of the Wesleyan Freeman was established in 1994 through the bequest of Mansfield Freeman, a businessman. And longtime resident in Asia who was a member of the Wesleyan University Class of 1916. Mr. Freeman was an insurance executive and one of the original founders of the American International Group, Inc. (AIG).

Each Freeman Scholar will receive a scholarship to cover the cost of tuition and student fees regardless of his or her family’s financial situation. Scholarship Benefits: Each Freeman Scholar will receive a scholarship to cover the cost of tuition and student fees (called “full tuition scholarship”) regardless of his or her family’s financial situation. In the school year tuition and fees total $48,272.


Candidate for the academic year beginning in late August must have completed their secondary schooling in Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and others. Preference will be given to those currently living in one of these eleven countries.

Freeman Asian Scholars are expected to return to their home countries upon completion of their degrees.

Eligible Requirement (Wesleyan Freeman Scholarships)

For you to be eligible for the SAT Reasoning Test of the College Board to Wesleyan. You must be available for the Baccalaureate exams and national exam.

We highly suggest that candidate living outside the US for whom English is NOT their first language must indicate with the following:

Standardized Tests for Admission

Applicants regardless of citizenship attending schools outside the US and Canada are not required to submit any SAT or ACT test results if is submitted by the student’s school.

The results should be of actual or predicted results for national, standardized, subject-based examinations such as the ‘A’ levels, French Baccalaureat, ISC, German Abitur, etc.

Both actual and predicted results would be preferred in cases where both are available. Students in an IB curriculum are expected to submit any predicted or actual IB exam results.

Applicants in the People’s Republic of China, where the SAT is not available, are exempted from this requirement.

English Proficiency (Wesleyan Freeman Scholarships)

Because English is the language of instruction at Wesleyan, English language proficiency must be demonstrated before you are admitted to the University. Wesleyan does not offer any remedial English courses.

Therefore, we highly recommend that applicants living outside the US for whom English is NOT their first language demonstrate proficiency with one or more of the following:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL)
  • International English Language Testing System(IELTS)
  • SAT (new or old versions)
  • ACT

A score of 100 or higher on the internet-based TOEFL, a 600 on the paper-based TOEFL, or a 7.0 or higher on the IELTS, 650 or higher critical reading section of the old SAT, or a 700 on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section of the new SAT,
