How To Get A Work Permit In Connecticut

Work Permit In Connecticut – A work permit, also known as a work visa, is an official document issued by the government of a state to an individual, which gives that individual the legal right to be employed within that state.

Work Permit In Connecticut

In the United States of America, there are two types of work permits issued by the government, one for immigrants, which is issued by the Federal government, and the other for minors issued by the state government.

Due to how important a work permit has become in the U.S., foreigners and minors who want to be employed within the state of Connecticut will need to know how to get a work permit in Connecticut.

In this article, we are going to be learning how to do just that.

A Brief Overview of Connecticut

Connecticut is a state in the New England region of the United States of America. It is known as the third smallest by area after Delaware and Rhode Island and the 29th most populous. The abbreviated name for this state is known as C.T.

Industries like finance, insurance, agriculture, trade, digital media, manufacturing and so on, have helped to develop the economy of the state so much that Connecticut’s per capita income in 2019 was estimated at $79,000, which is one of the highest of the states in the U.S.

If you are still indecisive on whether to work in Connecticut or not, I am glad to let you know that the state has the lowest percentage of the population living below the poverty level, plus it is one of the safest states within the country.

How To Get A Work Permit In Connecticut (For Minors)

Unlike other states in the U.S., the state of Connecticut does not issue a work permit to minors but issues another document that has the same function as a work permit. The document is referred to as the Statement of Age/Certificate of Age/Working Papers.

All minors who live within the state of Connecticut under the age of 18 must have their Statement of Age before they are allowed by the law to take up any form of employment.

According to Connecticut’s “Working Papers Manual”, the Statement of Age was invented by the government to ensure individuals under the age of 18 have proper documentation of their age, as well as make sure that the job they will work is acceptable under the law.

Connecticut Work Permit Application Process

The minor must get a job offer and obtain a “Promise of Employment” before they apply for a statement of age.

The promise of employment is a written document from a minor’s future employer that officially acknowledges the minor as an employee. It also contains a detailed description of the job in offer. It must be on the employer’s letterhead.

When the minor has obtained the Promise of Employment, the next step is for the minor to visit either the superintendent of schools of any local or regional school district or an agent assigned by the superintendent so that they may submit the document.

The minor should also bring the following documents: a social security card, a proof of age which could be their birth certificate, driver’s license, passport or baptismal certificate, and the already acquired Promise of Employment. This will help to complete the process for the Statement of Age.

The issuing officer will obtain a copy of the Statement of Age form in the Working Papers Manual”, which can be gotten from the Connecticut Department of Labor official website.

Once the minor has been issued a Statement of Age, they will be given a copy to keep for themselves, a copy will also be given to their employer, and the issuing officer will also retain a copy for record’s sake.

Getting a Work Visa in Connecticut (For Foreigners)

Individuals from foreign countries hoping to legally enter and work in Connecticut will first need to obtain a work permit, which is most times referred to as a work visa.

Most times, when a foreigner processes a visa to live in the U.S., they also process a work permit or a state work visa alongside.

Application process

The first step in applying for a U.S. work permit is to fill an application form, which is called a USCIS Form I-765. You can download this Form from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services website.

After downloading, the next step is to read the entire form carefully, then fill it out with the required information and add the correct attached documents, photos, and fees.

When you are done filling, send it by mail to the USCIS Service Center that serves the area where you live in Connecticut. Sending it online is also another option if you don’t have a mailing address.

Your application will be processed, and if your application is approved and you apply a formal visa application in addition to your work permit, you will be interviewed at the U.S. embassy or consulate in the country of residence as a foreigner.

You will also be required to pay additional application and issuance fees. After the interview, if you meet up to their requirements, you will also be issued a residence visa apart from the work visa.
